Destin in Five Days

Balance Destin beach time, a Crab Island outing, flexible water activities and two distinct waterfront districts with this five-day plan.

White sand and emerald Gulf water along the Destin coast.
White-sand beaches and emerald-colored Gulf water are characteristic of Destin.

Destin sits on Florida's Panhandle along the Gulf of Mexico. White-sand beaches, emerald-colored water, fishing, golf, seafood and Gulf views shape a five-day visit. Build the trip around three different kinds of time: a shore-based swim, a boat-access sandbar outing and a flexible activity day. HarborWalk Village and Baytowne Wharf add two distinct waterfront districts.

  • Choose Norriego Point for a shore-based swim in its jetty-protected inlets.
  • Treat Crab Island as a boat-access visit, not a place to swim across the pass.
  • High tide is recommended for clearer Gulf water over Crab Island.
  • Use one day for a main activity such as fishing, a dolphin cruise, parasailing, paddleboarding, snorkeling, golf, shopping or a movie.
  • HarborWalk Village is in Destin; Baytowne Wharf is in Miramar Beach, and the districts offer different activity mixes.

A five-day Destin itinerary

  1. Day 1: Start with Norriego Point for a beach-and-swim visit. Its public access points and calm, jetty-protected inlets make it a shore-based alternative to a boat outing.
  2. Day 2: Make Crab Island the main water outing. It is reached by boat, so plan around that access rather than treating it as a quick roadside beach stop.
  3. Day 3: Choose one main activity. Pick a boat-focused option such as fishing or a dolphin cruise, another water activity such as parasailing or paddleboarding, or a land-based alternative such as golf, shopping or a movie.
  4. Day 4: Explore HarborWalk Village. Combine time in the district with a restaurant or snack stop, browsing, or one of its listed attractions.
  5. Day 5: Visit Baytowne Wharf for a change of setting in Miramar Beach. Choose between its dining and shopping, a public performance, or the listed activity attractions.

The sequence gives the shore swim and boat-access sandbar their own days, then leaves a separate day for choosing an activity. The district visits can trade places if Baytowne's performances or HarborWalk's restaurant and attraction mix better suit your plans. Crab Island has a specific tide preference, so treat it as the water outing to plan around rather than an interchangeable stop.

Choose the right water outing

Norriego Point and Crab Island are not substitutes for the same kind of visit. Norriego Point is a sandy beach with public access from shore. Crab Island is a sandbar in a pass, reached by boat, where strong currents make swimming unsafe. Choose between them by whether you want a shore-side swim or time on and beside a boat.

Norriego Point for a shore-side swim

Norriego Point is a sandy beach near the end of Holiday Isle, with Destin Harbor on one side and the east pass on the other. Its jetty-protected inlets provide calm swimming water. That setting makes it a clear choice when the main plan is to spend time at the shore and swim, rather than arrange boat access to a sandbar.

There are two public beach access points with parking, open from dawn to dusk. The stated hours define a daytime visit. Within that window, Norriego Point can anchor a slower beach day or give the itinerary a shore-based contrast to fishing, a dolphin cruise or the Crab Island outing.

Crab Island for a boat-access outing

Crab Island is a raised sandbar inside Destin East Pass, north of Destin Bridge at the entrance to Choctawhatchee Bay. Water is about 1 to 4 feet deep in most places. That describes the general shallowness of the sandbar, not a safe route for swimming: currents in the pass are too strong for swimming.

You cannot reach the sandbar by car. Boats are the usual way to get there, and listed alternatives include shuttle excursions, pontoon rentals, private charters, jet skis and kayaks. The practical choice is which kind of water access fits your outing. Do not mistake the shallow water for an invitation to swim across or around the pass.

High tide is the recommended time to visit because clearer Gulf water moves over the sandbar then. The water's appearance changes as the tide goes out, so the same location can look different across the tidal cycle. This makes tide timing part of the choice to visit, rather than simply a detail about the view.

Described activities include relaxing aboard a boat, floating, paddleboarding and fishing. Food vendors and other floating businesses may be present, but their presence is not assured; some activities and purchases cost extra. There are no restrooms on Crab Island. Dewey Destin's is identified as the closest restroom, about a 2 to 3 minute boat ride away.

How to use the flexible activity day

Destin's activity range includes parasailing, paddleboarding, deep-sea fishing, snorkeling, dolphin cruises, shopping and movies. Golf is another area option. Rather than trying to fit several of these into the same day, choose one main focus and let the rest of the itinerary provide variety.

For a boat-centered day, choose between deep-sea fishing and a dolphin cruise. For a different kind of time on the water, consider parasailing, paddleboarding or snorkeling. Golf, shopping or a movie gives the day a land-based focus. These choices keep the itinerary flexible without turning the sandbar visit into a substitute for a shore swim or an unrelated activity.

Which waterfront district fits your plans?

HarborWalk Village and Baytowne Wharf both offer dining, shopping and entertainment, but they are in different communities and have different activity mixes. HarborWalk is in Destin and includes boat-tour operators; Baytowne Wharf is in Miramar Beach and has performances and a longer list of activity attractions.

HarborWalk Village in Destin

HarborWalk Village is at 10 Harbor Blvd, Destin, Florida 32541. Restaurants, shops, boat-tour operators, live entertainment and activities such as a mirror maze and zipline give the district several ways to shape a visit. Entry is free and open to the public; that does not make a meal, shop purchase or selected activity free.

Named restaurant choices include Harry T's Lighthouse, Jacacudas, Margaritaville and Grande Vista. For a quicker bite or drink, listed options include Kona Ice, Mojo Coffee Shop, Say Cheese and Boardwalk Fry Company. The range makes HarborWalk a practical district for combining a meal or snack with browsing or entertainment, rather than committing the entire day to a single scheduled activity.

Choose HarborWalk when you want restaurants and shops alongside boat-tour operators and attractions. Its free public entry is distinct from the cost of any purchases or individual activities. The mix suits a district visit built around eating, browsing and choosing among listed entertainment, rather than a beach or swimming stop.

Baytowne Wharf in Miramar Beach

The Village of Baytowne Wharf is at 9300 Baytowne Wharf Blvd in Miramar Beach, within Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort along Choctawhatchee Bay. The village is free and open to the public. Parking is free for most events, with some exceptions, including New Year's Eve and July 4. Shuttle service runs during summer and special events.

Baytowne LIVE performances are free and open to the public. The village also offers shopping, dining, parks and performances, so it can work as a low-key district visit or an outing built around live entertainment. Free entry to the village and its performances is separate from any spending on food or shopping.

For a more activity-led visit, the Baytowne Adventure Zone lists a zipline, ropes courses, a tower climb, a golf challenge and a tugboat ride. Other listed attractions include a carousel, arcade and laser maze. This is a different draw from HarborWalk's cluster of boat-tour operators, restaurants and shops, and gives groups more options than a meal or walk through the district.

Use HarborWalk for its Destin location, restaurants, shops, boat-tour operators and listed attractions. Choose Baytowne for its Miramar Beach setting, Baytowne LIVE performances or Adventure Zone options. Both districts are free to enter, but their locations, parking details and attractions are not interchangeable.
